Coffee With Brittany

Meet the gorgeous Mum of 6, US Navy Veteran, Brittany Hohenstein from Whidbey Island, Washington.

Tell us about yourself…

I am a US Navy veteran and have been married to my husband for 6 years. We have 6 wonderful children. Three of which I have birthed and three that I have been fortunate enough to help raise from my husbands previous marriage. I am a Lifestyle photographer and opened my own business about a year ago. My children were my biggest inspiration for following that career path. I was looking for ways to capture all our adventures and little moments that are to often forgotten or not documented. I never imagined that it would turn into a career that I love and cherish and I have been so blessed to be able to share my passion and talent with other families.

What has your motherhood journey been like so far?

Gosh, what a difficult question to answer. Being a mother is absolutely nothing like what I ever expected it to be and it has also been everything I never knew I needed. It has been the most difficult daily adventure and the most rewarding and healing “job” I will ever do in my life. There are so many challenges I face daily with my children. Most of which people that do not have children could never begin to comprehend. For example, my youngest daughter (Layla) who is 2 had a full fledged meltdown the other day because she asked for a snack and I gave her a snack. I mean we are talking legitimate tears and frustration that she got exactly what she asked for. I know every parent on the face of this earth (possibly other planets as well) can relate to that. Being a mother to 6 wonderful adventurous souls has tested my patience on so many levels and has made me want to be a better person each and every day my kids come into my room at 5am every single morning. Seriously guys, 5 am every single day with no regards to the fact that I might actually want to keep my eyes closed until there are signs of other life outside. On a serious note though, motherhood is a different journey for everyone and mine has been the greatest adventure I have been on.

What is your favourite:

Healthy food:

Definitely yoghurt with fresh strawberries, oats and bananas.

Way to stay active:

Our favourite way to stay active as a family is to be outdoors. Whether we are hiking, running around on the beach or playing sports with the kids.

Self love act:

My favourite act of self love is to lock myself in my pantry so I can eat all the snacks uninterrupted. I’m totally kidding on that last one a little bit – haha. Honestly, being a mom makes it difficult to find time to do things for yourself. One of my favorite things to do for myself though is to catch up on a good book, enjoy a hot coffee (emphasis on the hot) or try to get some adult time with a girlfriend without our kids while we do nothing but talk about our kids – haha.

What advice do you have for all moms out there?

Take it day by day. Your experience is going to be different from every other mother on this planet. Don’t feel pressured to parent a certain way. You know what is right in your heart. For those expecting moms, enjoy your pregnancy. All of it. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Despite what people might think or say, moms are still human. Even though we have superhuman qualities we still need help and if someone offers, take it!
