Coffee with Jacqui

Tell us about you, your family and what excites you in life.

Hi, I’m Jacqui from One Messy Mama, based in JHB. Married to Mr. B, with our 5 rambunctious and totally awesome kids aged 7,6,4,2 and 3 months old. I was previously a teacher turned SAHM when we moved to the USA, we have now returned to SA where I have decided to continue being a SAHM. I enjoy writing (obviously :)), meeting and inspiring other moms, and spending downtime with my family.

Jacqui, you have the most beautiful story about becoming a family of 7, please share this with our readers…

My husband and I battled for 6 years to fall pregnant – trying all manner of fertility treatments. Eventually, we were told that we would never fall pregnant unless we were willing to go the IVF route (which was simply well outside of our budget)… this lead to a painful season of coming to terms with the fact that we could not have children. As is often the case with dark times, redemption lay just around the corner. For us that moment came when we met and adopted our oldest 2 sons… 6 weeks later we found out we were pregnant! She was to be our first daughter. So in less than one year, we became the parents of 3 kids. Crazy 🙂 Then we were pleasantly surprised by baby #4. Another little girl who came less than two years after the first. Now, we decided, our family was complete. My husband booked his vasectomy and all plans were set to make sure our stock would remain at 4. Then the vasectomy was postponed by a month because the dr was ill… And in that month we fell pregnant with baby #5 (our youngest AND LAST son) … Shocked and surprised is an understatement! However, we would not change it for the world. We adore having a large family. It is crazy busy, hectic and exhausting (as is all parenting), yet we love every second.

What do you do to stay a) healthy b) active c) practice self love?

a) Favourite Food – Seafood

b) I love running – after my kids

🙂 c) Nothing beats a good book, glass of wine and a hot bath!

What advice do you have for fellow moms/moms-to-be?

My advice for any mom is to do what works for you. Ignore the books and all the advice, pick and choose what you want from it all and let it fit into how you parent. Don’t get stressed out about all the do’s and dont’s. Just parent to the best of your ability and you are sure to be doing a great job!

Are there any quotes you love?

I love this! Q&A posts are always so fun – and I always learn something! I love the idea of picking and choosing from all the “advice” to make parenting your own. As long you and the family are happy and healthy, you’re doing it right!
