Tell us about you, your family and what excites you in life.

I’m Kerryn Jones, a Durbs Mom. I’ve been married for nearly 8 years now to my incredible husband, Matthew. We have an 9 month old son, Levi, who brings us so much joy! I’m a working mom – I work at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital as a Dietitian. I love what I do and am passionate about helping people and seeing their lives improve through their diet. I also, together with my sister-in-law, run ZUZU collective. This is an online store selling quality, on-trend, locally-sourced baby items.


What do you do to stay healthy, active & practice self love?

I love a summer roast vegetable salad with rocket, seeds, feta and whatever else I have to throw in. I enjoy running although of late the busyness of life has got me down…I’m aiming for a nice walk a few times a week with Matt and Levi for now. Ah, I love having my hair/nails done…going for a massage…even having some time to just lie on my bed and read…


Kerryn, tell us about raising a child as a dietitian

Seen as my son is now 9 months, I recently started him on complementary foods. As a Dietitian I was super excited to introduce food to my little boy 😉 I was even happier when he absolutely loved it and now eats like a star! There’s a lot of advice out there on how you should introduce solids and so on but I really wanted Levi to love and enjoy healthy food. I started him on vegetables, fruit and even added some protein from the beginning. I wasn’t too cautious in giving him new foods to try every few days. I did a mixture of giving him mashed foods and also some finger foods. He now is super confident with his finger foods and actually refuses mashed foods altogether 🙂

He’s eating ‘grown-up’ foods without a problem! An example of his meals, now at 8 months – for breakfast he usually has plain, full-cream yoghurt with cooked apple/mashed fruit or oats and mashed fruit. Lunch is some chicken pieces, shredded a bit with some roast vegetables from the night before – butternut/sweet potato/baby marrow. Dinner is spaghetti with mince and some vegetables – peas, soft cooked carrot and broccoli. Some snacks during the day include dried fruit, fresh fruit – he loves strawberries, nectarines, kiwis, any fruit really ;). Sometimes he’ll have a plain rusk to chew on or some yoghurt also as a snack.



What advice do you have for new moms or moms in general based on your experience?

You can do it! Sometimes things feel overwhelming and there is literally just ‘so much to do’ but you really can do it. I also keep reminding myself to just enjoy every moment. Your baby isn’t a baby forever…one day Levi won’t want to sleep in my bed anymore and then I’ll wish I’d done it more 😉 so make the moments count.
